The Eastern District of Texas has received renewed reports of telephone scams falsely claiming the recipient missed jury duty. In one reported incident, the caller ID was spoofed to display "US Courts" and showed the number 409-654-2857. Callers threaten arrest and pressure the recipient to pay to avoid it.
Federal courts do not call or email prospective jurors to ask for money or personal information, and they never serve an arrest warrant by phone — a valid arrest warrant is always served in person. The court does not accept payment in lieu of arrest, and never by gift card, pre-paid card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency.
If you receive a call or email like this:
- Do not provide personal information or send money.
- Note the caller ID number or sender's email address, if available.
- Report it to the Federal Trade Commission and your local FBI Field Office.
- Verify any call by contacting the Clerk's Office of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
